Trapjaw

Trapjaws are semi-subterranean reptilian predators endemic to the deep desert, notorious among prospectors as "Ghost Crocs." Their physiology allows them to dive beneath loose sand and "swim" through it at alarming speeds, using powerful lateral undulations and hardened dorsal plates to stay submerged. Despite their size and aggression, Trapjaws have surprisingly poor surface awareness-low perception that often results in sudden, chaotic ambushes triggered more by vibration than sight. They'll scavenge readily, but once agitated they behave like full predators, erupting from the sand in explosive lunges.

Field guide

The species evolved around shifting dune basins where visibility and stability are unreliable. Over time, reliance on conventional senses diminished as they adapted instead to read pressure waves, heat gradients, and ground resonance. Their dense armor and elongated snout reflect a lifestyle built around brief, violent bursts from the substrate-ideally before prey even knows they're there.

"Damn near thought the sand was breathing. Turns out it was just one of them Ghost Crocs deciding which one of us to eat first."
